MICHAEL PURCELL
Managing Partner

Mr. Purcell is Managing Partner of the Greenville, SC office of VR Business Sales | Mergers & Acquisitions. Prior to VR, Mr. Purcell had increasing levels of operational and executive experience with private and publicly held companies including DuPont, Milliken, General Electric, and Danaher Corporation, in addition to start-up and small companies.
In his practice at VR, he draws upon a broad range of business experience including strategic analysis and planning, mergers and acquisitions, financial analysis, field sales, marketing, and technology commercialization. From the seller’s perspective, his experience includes preparing companies for a sales transaction including the targeting and identification of buyers, from a range of target segments including financial, strategic, corporate, and individual buyers. From the buyer’s perspective, his experience includes development of acquisition programs, identification and screening of acquisition targets, valuation, due diligence investigations, and post-acquisition integration activities. As a result, he is able to understand and navigate the needs of parties on both sides of the transaction.
Mr. Purcell holds a bachelors degree in chemical engineering from Purdue University, an MBA from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, and a South Carolina real estate license.
MARY ROBERTS
Transaction Advisor
Mrs. Roberts is a Transaction Advisor of the Greenville, SC office of VR Business Sales | Mergers & Acquisitions. Mrs. Roberts has a varied background in mergers and acquisitions having worked in the aerospace/defense, distribution, manufacturing, financial services, retail and wholesale and plastics industries. She has consulted and worked with both publically and privately held companies.
Mrs. Roberts has experience not only in mergers and acquisitions with deal sizes ranging from several million up to $25 million, but also she has done many different business valuations. Mrs. Roberts began her investment banking career with Philpott, Ball and Werner located in Charlotte, NC. There she was involved in transactions for local as well as international businesses. She also did numerous valuations for estate planning and transaction value. More recently, Mrs. Roberts worked for Elliott Davis as a business valuator. She has also provided financial consulting services for several local businesses including financial forecasting, marketing analysis, sales analysis and operational consulting. Her experience in both business valuations and transactions helps Mrs. Roberts create win-win results for the clients of VR Business Sales, Mergers & Acquisitions.
Mrs. Roberts has been in the Upstate for more than 10 years. She has been active in leadership roles and committees in her church, her children’s schools and community social initiatives.
Mrs. Roberts is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, received her MBA from Appalachian State University, and holds a South Carolina real estate license.
BRUCE JOHNSON
Transaction Advisor
Mr. Johnson is a Transaction Advisor in the Greenville, SC office of VR Business Sales | Mergers & Acquisitions. He brings a wealth of experience in acquisition transactions acquired while part of a team responsible for identifying, valuing, performing due diligence, acquiring and integrating eighteen companies over the last five years with revenues ranging from $250 thousand to $45 million, and totaling more than $125 million.
His recent merger and acquisition experience is supplemented with over 25 years of financial and operational management experience. This has included delivering superior results while in CFO, VP of Finance, Project Management and Operations management roles for companies of varying sizes in the healthcare, insurance, pharmaceutical packaging, food manufacturing/distribution, advertising and manufacturing industries. This blend of financial, operational and strategic exposure enables Bruce to quickly understand and present both seller and buyer financial and operational perspectives in a clear, concise manner. His project management and acquisition transaction skills are invaluable in facilitating the buying/selling of businesses of all sizes. He also is a licensed South Carolina Real Estate Salesman.
Johnson received his BS degree in Business Administration/Accounting from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He was a long time member of the Canisius College Council on Accountancy, as well as being involved in charitable activities to benefit teen scholar athletes.
